Why Am I a Therapist?

Becoming a therapist has filled me with lots of self-exploration and constant doubt that I am created for this work. However, this is the only type of work I can see myself doing for my life.

I am a therapist because I have a deep care for humanity. I want to understand why you do the things you do, what impacted and shaped you into the person you are, and how you see the world. I want to see the whole person and not just one part of you. I want to help you connect the dots to all your self’s and help you see your core values.

I am a therapist because I had so many people pour into my life as I grew up. I had pastors, youth ministers, teachers, friends, parents, and so many more individuals who stepped in when I needed help. Who said there would be better days ahead. Who said it was okay to constantly develop who you are and continue to define what life means to me.

I am a therapist because I have been on the other side of the couch. I know what it’s like to be the one sharing the hurts and vulnerable issues in your life. I know what it’s like to cry every session, be angry and frustrated, and be completely confused of what I am doing sitting here.

I am a therapist because I desire to make a difference even if it means sitting in silence for 50 minutes. I want to be the person who lets you be you in session. Every quirk and everything you bring. I want you to be able to breathe and let down the walls you hold up everyday to protect yourself. I want you to know that who you truly are is welcomed and wanted.

I am a therapist because I can listen, I can guide, and I can be available. I find joy in sitting across from you and listening to your story. I find growth in getting to be apart of your life and watching you change. I feel inspired to continue to fight for myself because you fight for yourself every time you show up.

I am a therapist because of you.
