Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do you take insurance?

We do not. Most insurance plans do not cover couples counseling in the way we provide it, which is why we are not in-network with insurance plans. When the insurance company does say they cover couples counseling, what we are required to do is give one of you a diagnosis. We do not do this; if you are presenting for relationship concerns, we do not feel that is ethical. You can read more about this here.

2. How long is the duration of couples counseling?

This is dependent on each couple. On average, couples are with us from 6 months to a year as our focus is for sustainable change, not quick change. Our goal is to help you change your relationship with skills that can be replicated for a lifetime. This takes time, and each relationship has different components to work on that impact the duration.

3. Will you tell us we should not be together?

No, we will not. Our role as therapists is to help you see the patterns and themes that are occurring in your relationship and provide our skills and guidance to change them for the better. Some couples counseling experiences do involve partners deciding they do not want to continue the relationship, but it will not be our decision-it will be yours.

4. What is the cost of therapy?

The cost is dependent on the therapist you work with and their session structure. Our team costs range from $50-300. Each therapist has a different style and background, which reflects their rates. We offer a free 20-minute consultation so you can discuss which therapist and approach is the best fit for your needs.

5. Do you have sliding scale options?

Each team member does offer sliding scale options. Most team members have 2-3 sliding scale spots available. You can inquire about whether a spot is available and discuss this more during your consult call.

6. Do you have in-person availability?

While we are primarily 80% virtual as a team, we do have in-person openings in West Seattle and Woodinville.

West Seattle for Aiden Plourde and Rachel Elder on Fridays.

Woodinville for Amy Schuler on Mondays from 5-9 pm.

7. Do you offer virtual therapy in Washington State?

Yes! All of our team members have virtual scheduling availability throughout Washington.

8. What happens during the first couples counseling session?

We call the first couples therapy session the joint interview session. Our team members explore your relationship history: how you met, all the commitment jumps you have made together, how you communicate and handle conflict, and what your hopes and goals. Your therapist facilitates the session and gathers the data they need to begin to create your personalized treatment plan.

9. How do I know if couples counseling is right for us?

Couples counseling can benefit your relationship at any stage. A common myth is that couples counseling is only for when things feel like they’re falling apart, and that is not true. Whether you’re dating, engaged, newly married, navigating a major life transition, or have been together for years, therapy provides a supportive space to strengthen your connection.

Couples counseling may be right for you if you’re experiencing frequent conflict, communication challenges, trust issues, emotional distance, recovering from infidelity, intimacy concerns, parenting disagreements, or simply feel stuck in unhealthy patterns. Many couples also seek counseling proactively to build stronger communication, deepen their connection, and prevent future problems.

You don’t have to wait until your relationship is in crisis to ask for support. The earlier you address challenges, the easier it can be to create lasting, positive change. If you’re wondering whether couples counseling is the right fit, we’d be happy to answer your questions and help you determine the best next step through our free 20-minute consults.
